How did Flicknexs build and optimize UpNext TV Network's OTT platform?

Core Solution & Headline Fix

Quick answer: This OTT platform case study covers how Flicknexs built UpNext TV Network, an independent entertainment network, into a white-label platform that turned a growing video library into revenue without forcing viewers into one monetization model. The build combined ad-supported (AVOD) and subscription (SVOD) access, with server-side ad insertion (SSAI) configured per video, a custom EPG, enterprise CDN integration, and social sharing metadata that keeps its branding intact. The headline fix: SSAI response time dropped from about 34 seconds to 0.2 seconds on warm requests, a 99%+ reduction.

Monetization Model

Hybrid AVOD + SVOD with per-video tier management

SSAI Performance

Response latency dropped from 34s to 0.2s (99%+ faster)

Delivery Infrastructure

Enterprise CDN with automatic pull-zone purging on video replace

Multi-Device Reach

Summary

Flicknexs delivered a multi-device white-label OTT infrastructure for UpNext TV Network, featuring sub-second VMAP SSAI ad decisions, enterprise CDN cache-purging, per-title monetization toggling, and native TV app deployment.

Project Overview

The Project At a Glance

Most streaming projects start with a question that sounds deceptively simple: “We have the content. How do we actually make money from it, and how do people watch it on every device they own?” UpNext TV Network's project turned out to be a textbook example of how much work hides inside that one question.

The Hybrid Advantage

AVOD hedges the bet by building top-of-funnel reach, while SVOD captures recurring revenue. Titles move fluidly between tiers as the catalog matures.

The Background

Who UpNext TV Network is, and what they needed

UpNext TV Network is an independent entertainment and streaming network focused on delivering video content to a general entertainment audience. It operates closer to a broadcaster that happens to stream: it builds a library, programs it, and wants to reach viewers wherever they watch.

The network wanted a hybrid streaming model from the start. Some content would be ad-supported, free to watch with advertising. Other content would sit behind a subscription. That combination, AVOD plus SVOD, is how many independent networks are choosing to run their business, because it hedges the bet: ads bring reach, subscriptions bring recurring revenue, and titles can move between the two as the library matures.

The Challenge

Nine requirements, one hard problem

The requirements list was short to read and long to build. Each item was common OTT functionality on its own, but the hard parts were the details: how ad decisions are made per video, how the EPG stays in sync with the VOD library, and how fast an ad request actually comes back to the player.

The Fatal Latency Issue

Why the 34-second ad request mattered

To understand why 34 seconds was fatal, it helps to know what an SSAI ad request actually is. When a viewer hits play on a video with an ad break, the player asks the ad server for a decision: which ads run, in which order, and at which positions. The server answers with a playlist, and playback starts.

On UpNext TV Network's existing setup, that answer could take about 34 seconds. For context, that is roughly the length of a full commercial break. A viewer would sit staring at a loading spinner for longer than they would spend watching the ad itself. Most viewers do not stay. The delay would have been the platform's biggest source of abandoned playback, and it would have eroded exactly the ad revenue the network was building the platform to earn.

The slow part was in the request path pipeline — a problem we could profile and fix in code.

The Architecture

One white-label platform, five working parts

Flicknexs delivered a white-label OTT platform tailored to UpNext TV Network's streaming and monetization requirements, bringing together content delivery, advertising, subscriptions, and platform-specific functionality within one OTT ecosystem, instead of five products glued together.

Part 1

The Library & Admin

Centralized VOD catalog management with per-video monetization and ad-break scheduling controls.

Integrated
Part 2

The Monetization Layer

SSAI for ad-supported titles and SVOD subscription access for paid tiers, toggled per title.

Integrated
Part 3

Multi-Device Applications

Native app builds published to 9 device environments from one single code and asset pipeline.

Integrated
Part 4

Custom Linear EPG

An interactive electronic program guide connecting scheduled and on-demand viewing in one interface.

Integrated
Part 5

Enterprise CDN & Social Previews

High-speed edge routing with pull-zone cache invalidation and custom Facebook Open Graph metadata.

Integrated

Repeatable Architectural Excellence

That structure is the same one we use for every white-label build. The shape of the platform is repeatable, and the repeatability is what keeps timelines and budgets honest.

Revenue Strategy

Why independent networks need both AVOD & SVOD

Pure SVOD forces every viewer to pay before watching a single minute. That works when you have massive brand awareness, but for an independent network building its audience, it creates severe top-of-funnel friction. Pure AVOD avoids the friction, but leaves money on the table from loyal fans who would happily subscribe for ad-free access or exclusive releases.

What makes hybrid work in practice is per-title control. A flagship title sits behind the subscription. A back-catalog title runs ads. When a title's performance changes, the network can move it between tiers from the admin side without a developer and without an app update. That is the difference between a monetization strategy decided once at launch and one that can respond to data after launch.

Per-Title Tier Management

AVOD TierAd-Supported

Free to watch with SSAI pre-roll, mid-roll, and post-roll ad insertions.

SVOD TierSubscription Only

Gated premium and flagship releases for paid subscribers.

Ad fill and subscription conversion vary by title, season, and audience. The Flicknexs admin makes switching any video between AVOD and SVOD a 1-click operation.

Engineering Breakthrough

How we cut SSAI response time from 34 seconds to 0.2 seconds

When we measured the existing SSAI workflow, an ad request could take about 34 seconds to respond. We profiled the request path before touching anything, and the profile told us exactly where the time was going: our own pipeline, in three specific places.

1

1. Caching Ad Decisions

Ad decision responses for the same video and slot configuration were being recomputed on every request instead of reused. We cached them so repeated requests for the same configuration skip most of the computational chain.

Optimized
2

2. Asynchronous Parallelism

Several internal validation and metadata calls that did not depend on each other were running serially, each adding its delay to the total. We refactored the pipeline to execute them concurrently in parallel.

Parallelized
3

3. Removal of Redundant Steps

Redundant middleware parsing and processing steps in the legacy request pipeline were adding latency without adding value. We eliminated them entirely from the execution path.

Enterprise CDN, Custom EPG, and 9 Environments

A great OTT service is defined by the details: automatic CDN cache management, an intuitive program guide, brand-consistent social previews, and seamless apps on every television.

Enterprise CDN Integration & Auto-Purge

UpNext TV Network runs its own dedicated CDN infrastructure. Flicknexs integrated directly with their CDN environment and implemented automatic pull-zone purging whenever video files are replaced.

When a video is updated, stale caches can serve the old file for hours. Our auto-purge ensures corrected files reach viewers immediately without manual CDN intervention.

Automated Purge

Custom EPG / Program Guide

A program guide is what separates a streaming product from a flat video shelf. We built an EPG around UpNext TV Network's specific programming schedule rather than a generic grid.

Viewers can discover scheduled broadcasts inside the streaming app, providing the familiarity of a traditional television network with modern VOD flexibility.

Custom Schedule

Facebook Open Graph & Social Branding

When content is shared on Facebook and social channels, custom Open Graph tag injection ensures preview cards display UpNext TV Network's verified title, description, and high-resolution thumbnail.

Every shared link acts as brand marketing without generic placeholders or third-party logos.

Daily Operations

Running the platform: what operations look like

A platform is only as good as what the team can do with it on a Tuesday. The technology was deliberately built so it is operated directly by the content team without engineering bottlenecks.

Content Operations

Handled entirely from the admin panel. New videos are ingested, transcoded, and pushed to the global CDN. An editor sets the VMAP ad schedule and access tier (AVOD/SVOD) in minutes.

Self-Serve

Ad Operations

The network monitors two crucial numbers: ad fill rate (share of ad slots sold) and ad completion rate. When a title underperforms, settings are adjusted instantly in admin.

Real-Time Data

Delivery Operations

Enterprise CDN handles global edge distribution. When new files overwrite old ones, the auto-purge pipeline clears stale cache without requiring CDN dashboard logins.

"I would like to thank Rajeev for his effort and collaboration from our initial meeting to the platform development stage. We were in search of a white label OTT platform for our brand, and Flicknexs provided us with everything we needed to know right from the beginning of the process. They mentioned that they are open to all kinds of customization and integration when we want to integrate different partners into the OTT Platform. Everything went smoothly for us in all stages. Their collaboration and platform methods are very consistent. What I like best about Flicknexs is that they provide very quick and accurate responses to every question. Their response times for taking action are very fast. They seek solutions to all kinds of real industry problems and provide our company’s needs to the platform in the most accurate way. The software interface is quite easy to use and multifunctional. So far, we haven’t encountered any drawbacks. Our platform was quickly soft-launched, and once we go live with the apps, our process will be complete. We wanted to transfer our bootcamp videos, which currently operate on a pay-per-view model on our existing website, to the OTT platform. This way, we aim to provide our customers with a better experience through multi-functional memberships and purchasing models than other platforms."

"We've been working with FLICKNEXS, and I've got to say, they're really good. Their platform has heaps of features (150 or so, they reckon), and it's awesome for streaming – works a treat on any gadget you've got. Big shoutout to Rajeev from their end. Top bloke. He's given us some solid advice and even sorted us out with a coder to help in the first month. Champion effort. Early days yet, but I reckon we're on to a winner with FLICKNEXS. If you're looking to stream your stuff and want the real deal, give 'em a bell. Top-notch."

"Phase 1 of our release has been seamless. From initial enquiry with Rajeev through to hand-holding all the way from Manoj and his support team. In less than two months we have developed and published on Android , Ios and Amazon Fire , with Android TV publishing imminent. We are now moving onto Phase 2, adding Samsung, Roku and LG into the mix. We already run a successful OTT platform on another service; and FLICKNEXS has so far proved to be a good alternative"
